VLAN — Virtual Local Area Network
Definition
A logical subdivision of a physical network, allowing traffic from multiple isolated networks to share the same physical switches and cables.
Context & Usage
VLANs are identified by VLAN ID (1-4094) carried in 802.1Q tags on trunk ports. Access ports carry untagged frames belonging to a single VLAN. Common VLAN usage: separating workstation/voice/guest/management/server traffic onto isolated logical networks. Cisco, Aruba, and all enterprise switches support VLAN configuration.
Examples
- VLAN 10 = Data, VLAN 20 = Voice, VLAN 99 = Management
- Cisco interface in trunk mode allowing VLANs 10, 20, 30
