NVMe-oF — NVMe over Fabrics

Definition

An extension of the NVMe protocol that allows NVMe commands to traverse network fabrics (TCP, RDMA over Ethernet, Fibre Channel) for shared storage.

Context & Usage

NVMe-oF brings the low latency of local NVMe to networked storage, replacing iSCSI/Fibre Channel for new high-performance deployments. Three transport variants: NVMe/TCP (any IP network, easiest deployment), NVMe/RoCE (low-latency RDMA over Ethernet), NVMe/FC (over existing Fibre Channel fabric). Typical latency: ~20-50 μs vs iSCSI ~100-300 μs. Adoption is growing in 2026 — major SAN vendors all support it.

Examples

  • Pure Storage FlashArray//X with NVMe/TCP
  • Dell PowerStore NVMe-oF support
