QoS — Quality of Service

Definition

A set of networking technologies for prioritizing certain types of traffic over others, ensuring critical applications get bandwidth and low latency.

Context & Usage

QoS is essential for VoIP (low latency required), video conferencing, and any real-time application competing with bulk data traffic. Implementation involves classifying packets (by port, IP, or DSCP markings), queuing them in priority queues at network devices, and policing/shaping bandwidth. Common QoS schemas: Cisco DSCP markings, IEEE 802.1p tags.

Examples

  • VoIP traffic DSCP EF (Expedited Forwarding)
  • Cisco AutoQoS for voice
