FC — Fibre Channel

Definition

A high-speed network technology used primarily for connecting servers to shared storage arrays in storage area networks (SANs).

Context & Usage

Fibre Channel offers low latency and high reliability for enterprise storage. Current generation: 32 Gb/s FC (Gen 6) and 64 Gb/s FC (Gen 7). Major switch vendors: Brocade (Broadcom), Cisco MDS. FC adoption has declined since 2015 as iSCSI and NVMe-oF have matured — but FC remains dominant in legacy enterprise storage.

Examples

  • Brocade G620 32 Gb/s FC switch
  • Emulex LPe35000 dual-port 32 Gb FC HBA
