SATA — Serial ATA

Definition

A serial interface protocol for connecting storage devices to a host, originally designed for consumer storage but widely used in cost-optimized enterprise storage.

Context & Usage

SATA is the lower-cost alternative to SAS — single-port (no dual-path redundancy), half-duplex (not full-duplex like SAS), and limited to 6 Gb/s. Used extensively in archive/backup tier storage, file servers, and cost-sensitive deployments. NL-SAS drives offer SATA-class capacity with SAS interface for better backplane compatibility.

  • Western Digital Red Pro 18 TB SATA HDD
