Frequently Asked Questions
Will any SFP transceiver work in my Cisco switch?
Cisco IOS by default rejects unbranded transceivers via EEPROM validation. To use 3rd-party (FS.com, ProLabs, Approved Optics) transceivers, run service unsupported-transceiver and no errdisable detect cause gbic-invalid in global config. Cisco-coded 3rd-party modules don't require this — they identify as Cisco to the switch. Cost savings: 70-95% vs Cisco MSRP, identical optical performance.
What's the difference between SFP, SFP+, SFP28, and QSFP+?
SFP = 1Gbps, SFP+ = 10Gbps, SFP28 = 25Gbps, QSFP+ = 40Gbps (4×10G lanes), QSFP28 = 100Gbps (4×25G lanes), QSFP-DD = 400Gbps. All SFP family modules use LC fiber connectors; QSFP family use MPO (multi-fiber) connectors. Cannot mix form factors physically.
When should I upgrade from 1GbE to 10GbE?
When any port consistently exceeds 700Mbps (70% of 1GbE capacity) over 30-day monitoring. Server-to-switch uplinks should upgrade first (largest impact), followed by aggregation, then desktops last. Cabling: Cat6 supports 10GbE up to 55m, Cat6a/Cat7 up to 100m.
Do you sell pre-owned / refurbished networking equipment?
Yes. Pro Disk Network stocks both new and certified refurbished switches, transceivers, NICs, and cables. Refurbished equipment is fully tested, firmware-updated, factory reset, and carries Pro Disk's 90-day warranty (1-year B2B option). Typical pricing: 40-60% of new MSRP for refurbished.
What about cabling? Do you have DAC, AOC, and fiber?
Yes. We stock DAC (direct attach copper) for short reaches under 7m; AOC (active optical cables) for 10m+ distances within a rack; LC-LC fiber patch cords for switch-to-switch in MMF (OM3/OM4) and SMF (OS2); MPO-MPO trunks for QSFP+ to QSFP+ connections; structured Cat6/6a/7 cabling for copper plant.
Need a switch-and-transceiver spec for your network?
Tell us your switch model and we'll match the right transceiver (Cisco-coded or 3rd-party with service unsupported-transceiver). For multi-switch deployments, we can supply a complete BOM including DAC cables, fiber, and structured cabling. Email sales@prodisknetwork.com or call (407) 900-2222.
