Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Cisco Catalyst and Nexus switches?

Catalyst switches are designed for campus/enterprise access and aggregation networks (LAN), running IOS-XE. Nexus switches are purpose-built for data center environments, running NX-OS, with features like VxLAN, FCoE, and ACI fabric support. Choose Catalyst for office networks, Nexus for data centers.

Do Cisco switches require a license?

Cisco Catalyst 9000 series requires DNA (Digital Network Architecture) licenses for advanced features like SD-Access, assurance analytics, and security. Base L2/L3 switching works with the included Network Essentials tier. Nexus switches include NX-OS features without additional licensing for most use cases.

What PoE standard do Cisco Catalyst switches support?

Cisco Catalyst 9200/9300 series support IEEE 802.3af (PoE, 15.4W), 802.3at (PoE+, 30W), and on select models, 802.3bt (PoE++, 60-90W) and Cisco UPOE+ (up to 90W). Sufficient for access points, IP phones, cameras, and IoT devices.

Can I use third-party SFP modules in Cisco switches?

Cisco switches detect and may reject non-Cisco branded SFP/SFP+ modules by default. However, most Cisco switches allow third-party optics with the CLI command "service unsupported-transceiver." Compatible third-party SFPs work identically at 60-80% lower cost.

Which Cisco switch is best for a small business?

For small businesses (10-50 users), the Cisco Catalyst 9200L (24 or 48-port PoE+) provides enterprise-grade features at an accessible price point. For very small offices (<10 users) on a budget, the Cisco Business 250 series (CBS250) offers smart-managed switching without DNA licensing requirements.
