FCoE — Fibre Channel over Ethernet

Definition

A protocol that encapsulates Fibre Channel frames in Ethernet frames, allowing FC SAN traffic to share an Ethernet fabric.

Context & Usage

FCoE was introduced to consolidate FC and Ethernet networks at the server NIC level using Converged Network Adapters (CNAs). Adoption peaked in 2010-2015; FCoE has largely been replaced by iSCSI and NVMe-oF for new deployments. Still found in legacy data centers with Cisco Nexus or Brocade FCoE switches.

Examples

  • Cisco Nexus 5548UP FCoE switch
  • Brocade VDX 8770 with FCoE
