How to Install an SFP/SFP+ Module in a Cisco Catalyst 9300
The Cisco Catalyst 9300 series supports SFP / SFP+ / SFP28 uplink modules. This guide covers the physical insertion, IOS-level verification, and common troubleshooting.

- Fiber patch cable (LC duplex) or DAC cable
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Identify the uplink module bay
Catalyst 9300 has 4 uplink module slots on the right side of the front panel. Remove the blank cover by pulling the latch outward.
Step 2: Remove the SFP/SFP+ transceiver protective cap
New transceivers ship with a small plastic dust cap over the LC fiber port. Remove and discard. Keep the cap for storage if you swap the module out later.
Step 3: Insert the SFP module
Slide the transceiver in straight, label side up, until you feel it click into place. Cisco SFP modules are keyed — they only fit one way. Do not force.
Step 4: Connect the fiber cable
Plug the LC duplex fiber cable into the transceiver. For DAC (direct-attach copper) cables, the cable is integral to the transceiver — just push it in firmly until it clicks.
Step 5: Verify in Cisco IOS
SSH or console into the switch. Run "show interfaces status" to see new TenGigabitEthernet1/1/1 (or similar) interface come up. Run "show interfaces tenGigabitEthernet 1/1/1 transceiver" for SFP details (vendor, part number, wavelength, signal strength).
Step 6: Configure the interface
Enter config mode (configure terminal), select the interface (interface TenGigabitEthernet1/1/1), configure as needed: trunk port (switchport mode trunk), access port with VLAN (switchport access vlan 100), or port-channel member. Save: write memory.
