KVM-over-IP — Keyboard/Video/Mouse over IP

Definition

A remote-access technology that lets administrators control a server's keyboard, video, and mouse from anywhere via a network connection.

Context & Usage

KVM-over-IP is implemented in BMCs (iLO virtual console, iDRAC virtual console) and standalone appliances (Aten KN8164V, Raritan Dominion). Provides BIOS-level access — works even when the OS is dead. Critical for remote data centers and out-of-office support. HTML5-based modern KVMs work in any browser.

Examples

  • HPE iLO 5 Remote Console
  • Dell iDRAC 9 Virtual Console
