HBA — Host Bus Adapter

Definition

A PCIe expansion card that provides connectivity between the host server and storage devices (SAS, SATA, Fibre Channel, NVMe).

Context & Usage

HBAs differ from RAID controllers in that they typically do not manage RAID arrays — they present each connected drive to the OS individually. Common HBA chipsets: LSI/Broadcom SAS3008 (8-port 12 Gb/s), SAS3408, SAS3416. Used in JBOD configurations, ZFS systems, and any environment where software handles redundancy.

Examples

  • LSI 9300-8i 8-port 12 Gb/s SAS HBA
  • Emulex LPe35000 dual-port 32 Gb/s Fibre Channel HBA
