Definition
An authentication method requiring users to present two or more verification factors (something you know, have, or are) to access an account.
Context & Usage
Common MFA factors: password + SMS code, password + authenticator app (TOTP), password + hardware token (YubiKey, FIDO2), biometric. Modern best practice: use phishing-resistant MFA (FIDO2/WebAuthn, hardware security keys) — SMS-based MFA can be bypassed with SIM swap attacks.
