Managed vs Unmanaged Network Switches
Managed switches add software intelligence (VLANs, QoS, monitoring, security) at 2-4× the cost of unmanaged switches. For any production network, managed is the only realistic choice.
Quick Verdict
Managed switches required for: VLANs, QoS for VoIP, port mirroring, link aggregation, PoE budgeting, monitoring. Unmanaged switches acceptable for: SOHO single-network, lab tier, simple plug-and-play.
Side-by-Side Spec Comparison
| Spec | Managed Switches | Unmanaged Switches |
|---|---|---|
| VLAN Support | Yes (4096 VLANs) | No |
| QoS (priority for VoIP/video) | Yes | No |
| Port Mirroring (for IDS) | Yes | No |
| Link Aggregation (LACP) | Yes | No |
| PoE Budget Per-Port | Yes | Fixed only |
| SNMP Monitoring | Yes | No |
| Security (802.1X, MAC ACL) | Yes | No |
| Cost (24-port GbE) | $200-600 | $50-150 |
| Deployment Complexity | Higher (CLI or web/cloud UI) | Plug-and-play |

Frequently Asked Questions
When do I need a managed switch?
Any time you need: VLANs for network segmentation, QoS for VoIP/video, port mirroring for security monitoring, link aggregation for redundancy, PoE budgeting, or SNMP/network management integration. Essentially: any production deployment.
Can I get away with unmanaged for a small office?
Only for the simplest deployments — 1 network, no VLANs, no VoIP, no IP cameras. Even most "small offices" have enough complexity (VoIP phones, security cameras, guest Wi-Fi) to need VLANs, which require managed switches.
What about cloud-managed switches?
Cloud-managed (Cisco Meraki, Aruba Instant On, UniFi) sits between unmanaged and full CLI-managed. Easier than CLI but requires a cloud subscription (Meraki) or external controller (UniFi). Excellent for SMBs without IT staff.
Our Recommendation
Managed switches for all production deployments. Cloud-managed (Aruba Instant On, UniFi) for SMBs without IT staff. Unmanaged only for SOHO single-network or lab tier.
