When do I need a managed switch?

Any time you need: VLANs for network segmentation, QoS for VoIP/video, port mirroring for security monitoring, link aggregation for redundancy, PoE budgeting, or SNMP/network management integration. Essentially: any production deployment.

Can I get away with unmanaged for a small office?

Only for the simplest deployments — 1 network, no VLANs, no VoIP, no IP cameras. Even most "small offices" have enough complexity (VoIP phones, security cameras, guest Wi-Fi) to need VLANs, which require managed switches.

What about cloud-managed switches?

Cloud-managed (Cisco Meraki, Aruba Instant On, UniFi) sits between unmanaged and full CLI-managed. Easier than CLI but requires a cloud subscription (Meraki) or external controller (UniFi). Excellent for SMBs without IT staff.
