Juniper optics carry EX-SFP, QFX-SFP and JNP part-number prefixes depending on the platform generation they were sold against. We hold optics across the EX campus switching line, the QFX data-centre fabric line, and MX routing.

Junos treats optics as a first-class object

One practical advantage of Juniper platforms is that Junos reports detailed diagnostics per module — show interfaces diagnostics optics gives you live optical transmit and receive power. That makes it straightforward to distinguish a failing optic from a fibre-plant problem, which is a genuinely useful thing when you are troubleshooting an intermittent link.

Do Juniper switches accept third-party optics?

Junos will typically bring up a link on a third-party module and may flag it as unsupported in logs. Correctly coded modules generally work well. Support entitlement is a separate commercial question from whether the hardware functions — factor that in if the platform is under an active Juniper contract.

What is the difference between Juniper EX and QFX?

EX is the campus switching line, built for access and aggregation with a feature set oriented to enterprise LAN. QFX is the data-centre line, built for low-latency leaf-and-spine fabrics with higher port speeds and fabric-oriented features such as VXLAN and EVPN.

How do I check optical power on a Juniper switch?

Junos exposes per-module diagnostics with 'show interfaces diagnostics optics'. This reports transmit and receive optical power along with warning and alarm thresholds, which lets you separate a marginal transceiver from a fibre or patch-panel problem.

Are QFX and EX optics interchangeable?

Sometimes physically, but do not assume it. Different platforms enforce different coding and support different rates on a given port. Confirm the exact platform and port before reusing an optic across families.
