US federal law that establishes requirements for protecting the privacy and security of patient health information.
Context & Usage
HIPAA applies to healthcare providers, health plans, healthcare clearinghouses, and their business associates. Technical safeguards include access control, audit logging, transmission security (encryption in transit), and data integrity. Hardware itself does not "do" HIPAA — compliance comes from configuration: encryption at rest (SED drives), encrypted backups, immutable storage for ransomware resilience, network segmentation, RBAC.
