About Solid State Drives

HP and HPE solid state drives are classified by endurance as well as by capacity, and the endurance class is the part most often got wrong. Two drives of the same size can be built for very different write loads.

Endurance classes

  • Read Intensive - built for workloads that mostly read. The lowest drive-writes-per-day rating and the lowest cost per gigabyte.
  • Mixed Use - a middle endurance tier for general virtualisation and database work.
  • Write Intensive - the highest endurance tier, for logging, caching and heavy transactional writes.

Older HPE listings use the phrase Mainstream Endurance for a comparable middle tier. Putting a read-intensive drive under a write-heavy workload will not fail immediately; it will simply consume its endurance budget faster than planned.

  • SATA 3Gb/s and 6Gb/s - the largest part of our HP SSD inventory
  • SAS 12Gb/s - dual-ported, the usual choice where controller failover matters
  • NVMe - PCI Express attached, in M.2 2280 and 2.5-inch form factors

Form factor and carrier

Most enterprise HP SSDs are 2.5-inch SFF. Fitting one into a 3.5-inch LFF bay needs an adapter, and hot-plug bays need the carrier that matches your ProLiant generation - carriers changed more than once across generations and are listed separately on our HP drive caddy page.

NVMe is not a drop-in replacement for SAS or SATA. It needs bays and a backplane wired for PCI Express, which not every ProLiant has.

What is the difference between read intensive and mixed use HP SSDs?

It is an endurance rating, expressed as drive writes per day. Read intensive drives are built for workloads that mostly read and carry the lowest endurance and lowest cost per gigabyte. Mixed use sits in the middle for general virtualisation and database work. Write intensive is the highest tier, for logging, caching and heavy transactional writes.

Can I fit an NVMe SSD to any ProLiant?

No. NVMe drives connect over PCI Express, so the server needs bays and a backplane wired for it. A chassis built only for SAS and SATA cannot take an NVMe drive in a hot-plug bay, regardless of the physical size matching. Some ProLiant models accept an NVMe add-in card instead.

Do HP SSDs come with the caddy?

Not always, and the carrier design changed across ProLiant generations. A drive supplied in one generation of tray will not necessarily mount in a different chassis. Tell us the server model and we will confirm the drive and carrier together.

Is a SAS SSD better than SATA?

For most workloads the difference is not raw speed but topology. SAS drives are dual-ported, which allows two controllers to reach the same drive and matters where controller failover is part of the design. SATA is single-ported and generally cheaper per gigabyte.
