JBOD — Just a Bunch of Disks
Definition
A storage configuration where each drive is presented to the OS as an independent disk without RAID abstraction.
Context & Usage
JBOD allows software-defined storage layers (ZFS, Ceph, Storage Spaces Direct, VMware vSAN) to manage disk-level redundancy and pooling themselves. Hardware RAID controllers can be flashed to "IT mode" or "HBA mode" to present JBOD. Required for TrueNAS Scale, ZFS-based systems, and most hyperconverged platforms.
