Category 1: The Rack
A proper 42U 4-post rack is the foundation. Do not use open relay racks for a server room --- they lack door panels, side panels, and proper cable management.
What to look for:
- 42U height (standard for server rooms)
- 600mm or 750mm width (750mm gives more cable room)
- 1000mm or 1100mm depth (deep enough for full-depth servers)
- Locking front and rear doors
- Removable side panels
- Weight capacity of at least 2,000 lbs
At the budget end, a generic 42U rack runs $500-800. Brand names like APC NetShelter SX (AR3100) or Tripp Lite SR42UB run $800-1,200 but include better cable management, tool-less mounting, and more robust construction.

Category 2: Power Distribution
Every rack needs at least two PDUs for redundancy --- one connected to each UPS output or separate circuits. Your servers have dual PSUs specifically so you can connect each PSU to a different PDU and survive a single PDU or circuit failure.

Category 3: UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)
A UPS protects against power outages, brownouts, and electrical noise. Size it to run your critical load for 10-15 minutes --- enough time for graceful shutdown or for a generator to kick in.
Sizing guide:
- Add up the wattage of all equipment in the rack (servers + switches + storage)
- Multiply by 1.25 for safety margin
- Select a UPS with VA rating at or above that number (assuming 0.9 power factor)
Example: Two Dell R750xs (750W each) + one Cisco C9300 (350W) + one NAS (250W) = 2,100W total. With 25% margin = 2,625W. At 0.9 PF, you need at least 2,917 VA. A 3,000 VA UPS is the minimum; a 5,000 VA gives room to grow.

Category 4: Cooling
Heat kills servers. A single 42U rack with 3-4 servers generates 5,000-10,000 BTU/hr. If your server room does not have dedicated HVAC, you need supplemental cooling.
Options:
- Dedicated mini-split AC (best): 12,000-18,000 BTU wall unit. $1,500-3,000 installed. Provides consistent temperature control.
- Portable AC unit (budget): 12,000-14,000 BTU floor unit with exhaust hose. $400-800. Works for single-rack setups.
- In-row cooling (enterprise): CoolIT or Vertiv units that mount between racks. $5,000+. Overkill for a single rack.
