How to Replace an HPE ProLiant DL380 Power Supply
HPE ProLiant DL380 (Gen9/Gen10/Gen11) servers support hot-swap redundant power supplies. With both PSUs installed, you can replace either one with the server running. This guide covers the exact replacement procedure.
What You Need
- Replacement HPE Common Slot (CS) power supply
- No tools required (tool-less PSU release)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Identify the failed PSU
Look at the rear of the server. Failed PSU has an AMBER LED (or no LED). Healthy PSU has GREEN LED. Cross-reference via iLO web UI > Power & Thermal > Power if amber LED isn't obvious.
Step 2: Disconnect the failed PSU's power cable
Unplug the IEC C13 (or C19 for high-wattage) power cable from the failed PSU. The server continues running on the other PSU.
Step 3: Press the PSU release lever
Each PSU has a release lever or button. Press it firmly. The PSU partially ejects from the bay.
Step 4: Slide the failed PSU out
Grasp the PSU handle and pull straight out. Set the failed PSU aside.
Step 5: Slide the replacement PSU in
Align the replacement PSU with the empty bay. Push firmly until you hear/feel it click into place. The PSU should engage with the chassis power connector at the back.
Step 6: Reconnect the power cable
Plug the IEC power cable into the new PSU. The PSU LED should turn green within 2-3 seconds. iLO will log the PSU recovery event.
Step 7: Verify in iLO
Open iLO web UI > Power & Thermal > Power. Both PSUs should show Health=OK, Status=Present. Both wattages should be balanced (within 10%) under normal load.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run an HPE ProLiant DL380 with only one PSU?
Yes — the server runs fine on a single PSU. You lose redundancy (a PSU or power circuit failure brings the server down) but operation is normal otherwise.
Are HPE PSUs hot-swappable?
Yes — all HPE Common Slot (CS) power supplies in the DL380 family are hot-swap. You can remove and replace either PSU with the server running, as long as the other PSU remains operational.
What HPE part numbers fit the DL380 Gen10?
865408-B21 (500W), 865414-B21 (800W), 865438-B21 (1600W) — all Common Slot Platinum Plus. Gen11 uses 50A-B21 / 51A-B21 (newer DigiSlot platform).
