SNMP — Simple Network Management Protocol

Definition

A standard internet protocol for collecting and organizing information about devices on IP networks, used for monitoring server hardware, switches, routers, UPS units, and printers.

Context & Usage

SNMP v1/v2c uses community strings (effectively passwords) for authentication — clear-text on the network. SNMPv3 adds encryption and stronger authentication. Vendor MIBs (Management Information Bases) translate raw OIDs into human-readable metrics. Common SNMP monitoring tools: LibreNMS, PRTG, Zabbix, Cacti, SolarWinds.

Examples

  • Dell iDRAC SNMP for hardware health
  • Cisco IOS SNMP for switch monitoring
