HPE ProLiant Gen9 vs Gen10 — Server Generation Comparison

HPE ProLiant Gen9 (Intel Xeon E5 v3/v4, 2014-2017) and Gen10 (Intel Xeon Scalable Gen 1/2, 2017-2020) are the two most-deployed HPE server generations in the refurbished market.

Quick Verdict

Gen10 wins on every metric: newer CPUs (Xeon Scalable vs Xeon E5), DDR4-2933 vs DDR4-2400, NVMe support, iLO 5 vs iLO 4, Silicon Root of Trust security. Gen9 is cheaper refurbished but missing key modern features.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gen10 worth the cost premium over Gen9?

Yes if you need ESXi 8.0 support, NVMe storage, or modern iLO 5 manageability. Gen9 is fine for legacy workloads, homelabs, and budget deployments where the older limitations don't matter.

Can I run modern OS on a ProLiant Gen9?

Yes — Gen9 supports Windows Server 2019/2022, RHEL 9, Ubuntu LTS, ESXi 7.0 (NOT 8.0). Most current OS versions work. The catch is ESXi 8.0 dropped Gen9 from the HCL.

Should I upgrade my Gen9 fleet to Gen10?

Only if you have specific drivers (VMware ESXi 8.0 support, NVMe storage need, FIPS Silicon Root of Trust). Gen9 servers remain useful for non-production, dev/test, and backup workloads for many more years.

Our Recommendation

For new production deployments: Gen10. For dev/test, lab, or budget-constrained refresh: Gen9 saves significant money with manageable trade-offs.
