Wake-on-LAN

Definition

A networking protocol that allows a computer to be powered on remotely by sending a special "magic packet" to its NIC.

Context & Usage

Wake-on-LAN is enabled in BIOS, requires NIC support and a powered-on switch. The "magic packet" contains the target MAC address repeated 16 times. Used for after-hours administrative tasks, power management, and remote-only server fleets. Modern servers also support WoL via iDRAC/iLO/BMC remote power control, which is more secure.

Examples

  • etherwake utility on Linux
  • PowerShell wake-on-lan tools
