About Air Shrouds & Baffles

A server air shroud (also called an air baffle or air duct) channels the airflow from the chassis fans directly across the CPUs, heatsinks, and memory instead of letting it scatter. Server cooling is engineered around the shroud being present — remove it and hot air recirculates, component temperatures climb, fans ramp to full speed (more noise and power), and CPUs can thermal-throttle. It is a small plastic part that has an outsized effect on cooling.

Air shrouds are model-specific — they are molded to the exact motherboard layout, CPU/DIMM positions, and chassis height of each server. A DL380 Gen9 shroud will not fit a Gen10, and a 1U shroud will not fit a 2U chassis. Do I really need the air shroud installed?

Yes. Server thermal design assumes the shroud is in place to direct fan airflow over the CPUs and DIMMs. Running without it causes hot-air recirculation, higher component temperatures, and the fans spinning up to compensate — which increases noise and power draw and can lead to CPU thermal throttling. It is one of the cheapest ways to keep a server cool and quiet.

Are air shrouds interchangeable between server models?

No. Air shrouds are molded to a specific motherboard layout, CPU and DIMM positions, and chassis height. Different models and even different generations of the same model use different shrouds — an HP DL380 Gen9 shroud will not fit a Gen10, and a 1U baffle will not fit a 2U server. Match the exact server model and generation.

What is the difference between an air shroud and a baffle?

The terms are largely interchangeable and vary by manufacturer — HP tends to say "air baffle," Dell and others say "air shroud" or "air duct." All describe the molded part that routes chassis airflow over the hot components. Some servers use several pieces (a main CPU shroud plus separate PSU or memory baffles); replace whichever piece is missing or cracked.
