Apple Xserve Parts

Apple discontinued the Xserve in 2011, and support ended long ago — but a good number are still racked and working, mostly in media production, post houses and education, where a machine that runs a validated workflow is left alone until it physically fails.

When one does fail, there is no OEM channel. Parts come from the secondary market.

Generations

• Xserve G4 — the original PowerPC generation
• Xserve G5 — the later PowerPC machines, with their own board and cooling design
• Xserve (Intel) — the Xserve1,1 through Xserve3,1 machines, the last of the line
• Xserve RAID — the Fibre Channel storage chassis sold alongside them

Parts rarely cross generations. A G5 board and an Intel board share a chassis silhouette and almost nothing else, and the power supplies differ too.

• Logic boards and front panel boards
• Drive modules and carriers — Apple Drive Modules are specific to Xserve and are not generic caddies
• Graphics cards qualified for the platform
• Rack hardware — mounting screws, faceplates and the small parts that go missing during a rack move
• Fibre Channel cabling for Xserve RAID

Apple part numbers

Apple service parts carry numbers in the 922- and 661- ranges. Quoting that number is the reliable way to order, because Apple frequently revised parts within a model without changing the external description.

A candid note

This is genuinely end-of-life hardware. It is worth maintaining when the machine is running something specific and revalidating that workflow would cost more than the repair. It is not worth building a new deployment on. If you are choosing between repairing an Xserve and moving the workload, we will say so rather than sell you a part you do not need.
