Edge Computing Servers — Compact, Ruggedised, Field-Deployed

Edge sites — retail stores, manufacturing floors, cell towers, vehicle deployments — have constraints that data-centre servers don't tolerate: depth limits (often 18-21 inches vs 30+), wider temperature range (0-55°C operating), particulate filtering, and sometimes shock/vibration ratings.

Pro Disk Network stocks the major edge-class platforms: Dell PowerEdge XR2 / XR4 / XR12 (short-depth rack), Dell PowerEdge XR8000 (multi-node), HP ProLiant DL20 Gen10 (short-depth, low-cost), HP Edgeline EL300 / EL1000 / EL4000 (fully ruggedised, MIL-STD-810), and Cisco UCS C-series compact models.

Common deployments include retail point-of-sale aggregation, video-analytics inference at industrial sites, 5G mobile edge compute (MEC) cores, and ROBO branch-office consolidations. Most edge platforms ship with M.2 boot, dual short-depth PSUs, and 4-8 SFF drive bays.

For full ruggedisation (NEBS Level 3, IEC 60721 K classes), HPE Edgeline and Dell XR4500c systems are designed to meet specific environmental certifications — important for telco / utility / oil-and-gas deployments. Pricing: $4-12K new for typical short-depth, $15-40K for full-rugged with extended-temp parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the depth difference between edge and standard rack servers?

Standard data-centre servers are 27-32 inches deep (762-813 mm). Short-depth edge servers are 14-21 inches (356-533 mm). The trade-off: fewer drive bays and lower max wattage, but they fit in 24-inch network cabinets, retail displays, or wall-mounted enclosures.

Do edge servers need ECC memory?

Yes for any mission-critical deployment. ECC catches single-bit errors that are more common at higher temperatures and altitudes. All edge servers we ship have ECC RDIMM/UDIMM. Some consumer-grade mini-PCs marketed as 'edge' lack ECC — avoid those for production.

Can I deploy an edge server without active cooling?

Some platforms (HPE Edgeline EL300, fanless models from Supermicro) support fanless operation up to certain TDP. For most edge deployments, low-RPM fans + dust filter + extended-temp parts is the better choice. We can spec the right cooling profile for your site.

What's the warranty on a refurbished edge server?

90-day Pro Disk Network warranty minimum on refurbished edge platforms. We extend to 1-3 years for volume orders or in regulated industries. New units carry the original manufacturer warranty (typically 3-year ProSupport or equivalent).
