About Server Processors

Dell PowerEdge processors can be identified two ways, and it is worth knowing both. Dell assigns its own part number, historically in the 311-xxxx and 3xx-xxxx ranges and more recently as a five-character alphanumeric code. The processor itself also carries an Intel spec code beginning SL or SR, printed on the heat spreader.

Which number to search on

If you are replacing a failed CPU, the Dell part number is the safer identifier because it reflects the exact part Dell qualified for that platform. If you only have the chip in your hand, the Intel spec code will pin down the frequency, cache and stepping precisely, which is often enough.

Matching a processor to a PowerEdge

PowerEdge generations are tied closely to socket and chipset, and the BIOS will only run the processor families it was validated for. In a two-socket server both processors must be identical. A second processor also requires its own heatsink, and on several PowerEdge models the shroud and fan complement change when the second socket is populated.

Because each processor owns its own memory channels, half the DIMM slots on a two-socket board stay inactive until the second CPU is fitted. Dell server memory covers that side of the upgrade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I order by Dell part number or Intel spec code?

Either works, but they answer different questions. The Dell part number identifies the exact part Dell qualified for that platform. The Intel spec code, an SL or SR code printed on the heat spreader, identifies frequency, cache and stepping. If you have the old processor in hand, the spec code is usually enough; if you are ordering blind for a specific server, the Dell part number is safer.

Can I put any Xeon with the right socket into a PowerEdge?

No. The BIOS only runs processor families that generation was validated for, and several sockets carried more than one generation. LGA2011, for example, spans processors that are not interchangeable across PowerEdge generations. Confirm against the server model rather than the socket.

Why are half my memory slots doing nothing?

On a two-socket board each processor owns its own memory channels, so the DIMM slots wired to an empty socket stay inactive. Fitting the second processor brings them online. This is normal behaviour, not a fault.

Do you supply the heatsink with the processor?

The heatsink is a separate part on most PowerEdge platforms and is not automatically included. If you are populating a second socket you will need it, and on several models an extra fan or a revised air shroud as well. Send us the server model and we will list what the upgrade actually requires.
