Form Factor Reference

The physical form factor determines which port the transceiver fits into. Do not mix these up --- they are not interchangeable.

They cost 30-50% less than LR modules and multimode fiber patch cords are cheaper than single-mode. Only step up to LR when you need to span between buildings or exceed 550 meters.

  2. Match the speed --- do not put a 10G SFP+ in a 1G-only SFP slot expecting it to auto-negotiate down (some platforms support this, many do not)
  3. Match the fiber type --- SR transceivers require multimode fiber, LR requires single-mode. Wrong fiber type = no link
  4. Check DOM support --- Digital Optical Monitoring lets you read transceiver temperature, TX/RX power, and bias current through the switch CLI. Most modern transceivers support DOM.
