About Network Transceivers

Dell optics span an unusually wide speed range in the second-hand market, because Dell's data-centre switching went to 25G and 100G comparatively early through the Force10 lineage. We stock roughly nineteen hundred transceiver SKUs across the whole range.

Speed tiers and where they sit

  • 1G SFP — campus access and out-of-band management
  • 10G SFP+ — the workhorse tier; server uplinks and ToR
  • 25G SFP28 — modern leaf-to-server, replacing 10G in new builds
  • 40G QSFP+ — legacy spine uplinks, four 10G lanes
  • 100G QSFP28 — current spine and inter-switch, four 25G lanes

Breakout is where the money usually is

A 40G QSFP+ port can commonly be broken out into four 10G SFP+ links, and a 100G QSFP28 port into four 25G SFP28 links, using a breakout cable or an MPO harness. On a switch with limited port count this is often far cheaper than buying another switch — but breakout has to be supported and explicitly configured on that platform, and not every port on a given switch supports it.

We will not guess at that for you. Tell us the switch model and how you intend to break the ports out and we will confirm whether the configuration is supported before quoting the optics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Dell switches require Dell-coded transceivers?

It depends on the platform and firmware. Some Dell switches raise a warning for non-Dell optics but still pass traffic; others are stricter. Where coding matters we can supply Dell-coded modules — tell us the switch model and we will match it.

What is the difference between SFP28 and SFP+?

SFP+ runs at 10 Gbps, SFP28 at 25 Gbps. They share the same physical form factor, and SFP28 ports will generally accept SFP+ modules at the lower rate. The reverse does not hold — an SFP+ port cannot run a 25G module at 25G.

Can I break a 100G QSFP28 port into 4x 25G?

On many platforms yes, using a breakout cable or MPO harness, because 100G QSFP28 is built from four 25 Gbps lanes. Whether a specific port supports it depends on the switch and its configuration — some platforms only allow breakout on particular port groups. Confirm before ordering.

Will a QSFP28 module work in a QSFP+ port?

Generally no. QSFP+ ports are built for four 10 Gbps lanes and cannot drive a 100G module at rate. The reverse is more often supported — many QSFP28 ports will accept a 40G QSFP+ module — but this is platform-dependent and should be verified.
