About Fibre Channel Hard Drives

Fibre Channel hard drives are the disks used inside older SAN arrays and disk shelves, before SAS displaced FC at the drive level. They remain in demand for one straightforward reason: arrays of this generation are still in service, and a failed drive has to be replaced with the same interface.

What distinguishes an FC drive

  • Dual-port — two independent paths to the drive, allowing an array to keep access through a controller or loop failure
  • Hot-pluggable — designed to be replaced while the array is running
  • 2Gb/s FC — the interface rate on the bulk of the drives we carry
  • 10000RPM and 15000RPM — these are enterprise drives, and the capacities are correspondingly modest by modern standards

An FC hard drive is a disk that sits inside an array. A Fibre Channel HBA is the host adapter that connects a server to the SAN fabric. Mounting and array compatibility

FC drives were supplied in array-specific carriers, and the carrier is usually the constraint rather than the drive. Array firmware in this generation is also frequently particular about which drive part numbers it will accept into a RAID set — behaviour that varies by array family and firmware revision, so we do not claim universal compatibility.

What is the difference between a Fibre Channel hard drive and an FC HBA?

A Fibre Channel hard drive is a disk that sits inside a storage array or disk shelf. A Fibre Channel HBA is the host bus adapter installed in a server to connect it to the SAN fabric. They serve completely different roles despite both being described as fibre channel.

Why are Fibre Channel drives dual-port?

Dual-port gives the array two independent paths to each drive, so access survives the failure of a controller, cable or loop. That redundancy is a core requirement of SAN storage design and is one of the main features distinguishing FC and SAS enterprise drives from single-port SATA.

Can I replace a Fibre Channel drive with a SAS drive?

No. The interfaces are electrically and physically different, and an FC backplane will not accept a SAS drive. Replacing FC with SAS means replacing the array or shelf itself, not just the disks.

Will any FC drive work in my array?

Not necessarily. Arrays of this generation are often specific about which drive part numbers they will admit into a RAID set, and the carrier is array-specific as well. Confirm both the accepted part number and the carrier for your particular array and firmware revision.
