HP ProLiant Drive Carriers & Caddies: SC vs BC, SFF vs LFF (by Generation)

A bare drive will not seat in a ProLiant without the right carrier — and HPE changed the carrier design between server generations. Here is how to tell Smart Carrier (SC) from Basic Carrier (BC), SFF from LFF, and how to make sure the drive you buy actually fits the bays you have.

TL;DR — match the carrier to the server generation

The single most common HPE storage ordering mistake is getting the drive spec perfect, then ordering a carrier that does not fit the chassis. Two things have to match your ProLiant:

  • Carrier type: Smart Carrier (SC) for Gen8, Gen9, Gen10; Basic Carrier (BC) for Gen10 Plus and Gen11.
  • Form factor: SFF (2.5") or LFF (3.5") — your bays are built for one (some LFF chassis take SFF drives via an adapter tray).

Get those two right and the drive hot-plugs straight in.

Why the carrier even matters

ProLiant drive bays are hot-plug. The carrier is the sled that latches the drive into the backplane, carries the activity/health LEDs, and lets you swap a drive without tools or downtime. A loose, carrier-less drive cannot seat in the backplane connector or trigger the LEDs — so "the drive" not fitting is almost always "the carrier" not matching.

If a listing says "with tray" or "with Smart Carrier," it includes the SC sled — correct for Gen8-Gen10. For a Gen10 Plus or Gen11 server, you need the BC version. When in doubt, tell your supplier the exact server model (e.g., DL380 Gen10 vs DL380 Gen10 Plus) and let them match the carrier.

SFF vs LFF

  • SFF (2.5") — the dense, performance form factor. Most 10K/15K SAS and most enterprise SSDs are SFF.
  • LFF (3.5") — the high-capacity form factor, home to the big 7.2K nearline drives (up to 16TB+).

An LFF-to-SFF converter tray lets a 2.5" drive sit in a 3.5" bay on chassis that support it — handy when you want SSDs in an LFF backplane. The reverse (3.5" into 2.5") is not possible physically.

Buying notes

  • Most HPE drives ship "with tray/carrier." Many inventory units explicitly state it (e.g., the SAS and NVMe drives listed "With Tray"). Buying the drive-plus-carrier kit for your generation is the simplest path.
  • Blanks and fillers matter. Empty bays should keep their drive blanks installed — they maintain front-to-back airflow. Pulling a drive and leaving the bay open can raise temps on neighboring drives.
  • Don't force it. SC and BC are close enough in size that people try to force the wrong one. If it doesn't seat with light pressure, it's the wrong carrier — stop before you damage the backplane connector.

FAQ

Can I reuse my old caddies with new drives? Yes, within the same carrier generation — pull the old drive from an SC sled and fit a new SC-compatible drive, as long as the interface (SAS/SATA) matches the backplane.

Will a Gen9 (SC) drive work in a Gen10 Plus (BC) server? The drive electronics may be compatible, but the carrier won't seat. You need the BC carrier for that bay.

Do third-party caddies work? Often, mechanically — but HPE genuine carriers integrate cleanly with iLO drive-health LEDs and avoid "unsupported" advisories. For a few dollars of difference, genuine carriers save troubleshooting.
