EMC VNX & CLARiiON Replacement Drives

Array-formatted SAS, NL-SAS, flash and Fibre Channel drives, matched by EMC part number

About VNX & CLARiiON Drives

EMC storage arrays (the VNX, VNX2 and VNXe families and the CLARiiON CX4 before them) only accept drives prepared for EMC. Their drives are formatted with 520-byte sectors, where the extra bytes carry checksum data the array uses to protect integrity, and they run EMC firmware. A retail drive of the same capacity and speed will not join a RAID group or storage pool.

That is why EMC drives are ordered by EMC's own numbers rather than by the drive maker's model. Each drive carries an EMC part number on its label, usually a nine-digit number beginning 005 or 118, and a model code that appears on the carrier and in the array's disk inventory, with codes such as V2-PS07-030 or V6-2S6F-200.

The array families this lineup covers

  • VNX (first generation): VNX5100, VNX5300, VNX5500, VNX5700 and VNX7500 unified arrays
  • VNX2: VNX5200, VNX5400, VNX5600, VNX5800, VNX7600 and VNX8000
  • VNXe: VNXe3100, VNXe3150, VNXe3200 and VNXe3300 entry arrays
  • CLARiiON CX4: the generation that preceded VNX

Before you order

  • Read the EMC part number from the failed drive's label, or from the disk properties in the array's management software (Unisphere on VNX, Navisphere on CLARiiON), and quote it with the array model.
  • Match the form factor to the shelf: 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch drives go into different disk-array enclosures and carriers.
  • Match the drive type to the RAID group or pool: flash, SAS and NL-SAS are separate tiers on these arrays.
  • Some EMC drives are supplied with an interposer that adapts the drive's interface to the shelf it targets; the listing says so where that applies.

VNX, VNXe and CLARiiON are end-of-life platforms, so like-for-like spares are the practical way to keep an installed array healthy. Send us the EMC part number and the array model and we will confirm the exact match.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a standard Seagate or HGST drive in an EMC VNX?

No. VNX and CLARiiON arrays expect drives formatted with 520-byte sectors and running EMC firmware. A standard drive of the same capacity, even from the same manufacturer, will not be accepted into a RAID group or storage pool. Order the replacement by its EMC part number.

Where do I find the EMC part number of a drive?

On the drive label, where EMC part numbers are typically nine digits beginning 005 or 118, and in the disk properties shown by Unisphere (VNX) or Navisphere (CLARiiON). The model code on the carrier or in the array inventory identifies the drive type. Quote both if you can.

What is the difference between VNX and VNX2?

VNX2 (VNX5200 to VNX8000) is the 2013 refresh of the first-generation VNX (VNX5100 to VNX7500), with new storage processors and EMC's MCx multicore software. Drive compatibility follows the array generation and shelf, so give us the exact array model.

Are EMC VNX arrays still supported?

VNX, VNXe and CLARiiON have been superseded by Dell's Unity and PowerStore lines and are past end of sale, so most installed systems are kept running with spares. Check Dell's support site for the service status of your specific model.
