Gigabit Ethernet remains the access layer in most buildings, and it is where the largest part of our optics inventory sits. Pro Disk Network stocks 1G SFP and GBIC transceivers across Cisco, HPE and Aruba, Juniper, Brocade, Enterasys, Foundry, Transition Networks and Finisar-class compatible optics.

The 1000BASE reach classes are defined by IEEE 802.3, so the optic you need follows from your fibre plant rather than the switch brand:

SFP or GBIC?

They are not interchangeable. GBIC is the older, physically larger module with an SC connector, used in switches from the late 1990s and early 2000s. SFP (sometimes "mini-GBIC") replaced it with a smaller body and duplex LC connectors. A switch cage accepts one or the other, never both. We stock both, plus CWDM and DWDM variants for wavelength-multiplexed links.

Compatible optics are factory-coded with the vendor EEPROM the host switch expects. Tell us the exact switch model and we will confirm the correct coding and reach class before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a GBIC and an SFP?

GBIC is the older and physically larger form factor, normally with an SC connector. SFP — also called mini-GBIC — is the smaller replacement with duplex LC connectors. A switch port cage takes one or the other; they cannot be swapped without changing the switch.

Which 1G optic do I need for a 2 km single-mode run?

1000BASE-LX/LH, rated to 10 km on single-mode fibre at 1310 nm, comfortably covers 2 km. 1000BASE-SX is multimode only and will not reach that distance; ZX at 80 km would be over-specified and can overdrive a short link without an attenuator.

Can I use a 1G SFP in a 10G SFP+ port?

Usually yes — most SFP+ cages are backward compatible with 1G SFP modules, though the port then runs at 1 Gigabit and some platforms require explicit speed configuration. The reverse is not true: a 10G SFP+ module will not work in a 1G-only SFP cage.

Do you stock copper 1000BASE-T SFPs?

Yes. Copper SFPs with an RJ-45 connector run Gigabit over Cat5e/Cat6 to 100 m, and are the usual way to land a copper device on a fibre-only switch. Note they draw more power than optical SFPs, which matters when a switch is fully populated.
