About Blanks & Fillers

Blanks and filler panels are the cheapest thermal and EMI fix in the rack. Server airflow is engineered assuming every drive bay, PSU slot, fan bay, and PCIe slot is either populated or blanked. An open bay lets cooling air bypass the hot components behind it — Dell and HPE both document higher temperatures and faster fan speeds (more noise, more power) when blanks are missing. Blanks also maintain EMI shielding and keep dust out.

Do drive blanks and fillers actually matter for cooling?

Yes. Server airflow is engineered assuming every bay, PSU slot, and PCIe slot is populated or blanked. An open bay lets cooling air bypass the hot components behind it — Dell and HPE both document higher component temperatures and faster fan speeds (more noise, more power) when blanks are missing. Blanks are the cheapest thermal fix available and also maintain EMI shielding.

Are drive blanks universal or model-specific?

They are specific to the bay design. A 2.5" SFF drive blank fits SFF hot-swap cages, a 3.5" LFF blank fits LFF cages, and the latching mechanism varies by manufacturer and generation. HP, Dell, and IBM blanks are not interchangeable. Match the drive form factor and the server model to get a blank that seats and latches correctly.

What is a DIMM blank for?

A DIMM blank (or memory air-flow cover) fills an empty memory slot to preserve the engineered airflow path across the DIMM banks. On some high-density servers the manufacturer requires DIMM blanks in unpopulated slots to keep the CPUs and populated DIMMs within their thermal limits. If your server shipped with them, keep the empty slots blanked.
