HP's optics catalogue is genuinely awkward to navigate, because the same physical module can appear under several naming schemes depending on which era and which platform it was sold for. X-series marketing names (X121, X122, X132) sit alongside J-numbers for ProCurve-era parts and JD/JG/JL part numbers for the H3C-derived FlexFabric and Aruba lines.

We hold optics across all of those schemes — roughly three thousand distinct transceiver SKUs — which is what makes it practical to match an exact existing part rather than substitute something approximate.

The naming families you will encounter

  • X121 — 1G SFP, the standard campus access optic
  • X132 — 10G SFP+, distribution and uplink
  • J-numbers (J4858, J9150 style) — ProCurve-era optics
  • JD / JG / JL numbers — FlexFabric, Comware and later Aruba platforms

Vendor coding is the thing that bites

HP switches read a vendor ID from the transceiver's EEPROM. A module that is electrically perfect but coded for another vendor may be rejected or flagged, and behaviour differs between ProCurve, ArubaOS-Switch and Comware platforms. Coding has to match the platform, not just the speed and reach.

Because of that we do not publish blanket "works in any HP switch" claims. Tell us the switch model and the port you are populating and we will confirm the correct optic and coding for that specific combination before it ships.

What is the difference between HP X121 and X132 transceivers?

X121 is HP's 1 Gigabit SFP family; X132 is the 10 Gigabit SFP+ family. They share the SFP form factor but run at different rates. A 10G SFP+ port will usually accept a 1G SFP module and negotiate down, but a 1G-only port will not run a 10G module.

Will a third-party transceiver work in an HP or Aruba switch?

Usually yes, provided it is coded for the correct HP platform. The switch reads vendor information from the module's EEPROM, and coding requirements differ between ProCurve, ArubaOS-Switch and Comware-based FlexFabric platforms. Tell us the switch model and we will supply correctly coded optics.

What do SR, LR and ER mean on a transceiver?

They describe optical reach. SR is short-range over multimode fibre, typically to a few hundred metres. LR is long-range over single-mode, commonly to 10 km. ER extends further again, usually to 40 km. The transceiver must match the fibre type installed — SR optics will not work over single-mode.

Can I mix HP and third-party optics on the same switch?

Yes. Optics are negotiated per port, so there is no requirement for a switch to be populated uniformly. Both ends of a given link must match in speed, wavelength and fibre type, but different ports on the same switch can carry different modules from different sources.
