Sun Microsystems hardware did not stop working when Oracle acquired the company in 2010, and a great deal of it is still in production — particularly in telecommunications, finance and government, where a certified Solaris application is far more expensive to re-platform than to keep running.

What did stop was the supply channel. That is the gap this page exists to fill.

Reading a Sun part number

Sun used a consistent scheme that makes ordering unusually reliable once you know it. Numbers take the form NNN-NNNN, and the leading block is a rough guide to the part class:

  • 300-series — power supplies and power-related assemblies
  • 501-series — system and controller boards, and older memory modules
  • 540-series — CPU and memory system boards, fan modules and chassis assemblies
  • 390-series — storage, including Sun-coded hard drives

Drives are worth a specific note: Sun-coded disks frequently carry a Sun part number alongside the original manufacturer's model, and a Sun-firmware drive is often what the array expects. A physically identical drive with vendor firmware may not be accepted.

What is realistically available

Power supplies, fan modules, system and I/O boards, memory, disks and controller cards. Complete systems appear occasionally but the practical trade in this hardware is component-level: keeping an installed machine alive rather than replacing it.

Because this is end-of-life hardware, availability moves. If a part is not listed, ask — stock of this generation turns over in ways the catalogue does not always reflect.

Yes, through the secondary market. Oracle ended the original supply channel, but a substantial pool of Sun hardware remains in circulation. How do I read a Sun part number?

Why keep running SPARC hardware at all?

Because re-platforming is usually the larger cost. Certified Solaris applications, regulated telco equipment and long-lived control systems are expensive to revalidate on new architecture, so keeping the existing machine supported is frequently the cheaper and lower-risk path.
