Brocade means two quite different things depending on which part of the portfolio you are buying. The Fibre Channel SAN business is the one most people mean — fabric switches that sit between servers and storage arrays. The ICX campus switching line came from the Foundry acquisition and is Ethernet.

Both ended up in different hands: the FC business went to Broadcom, and the campus networking business went to CommScope via Ruckus. The hardware in the field is unaffected by that, but it does explain why support paths differ.

Port-on-demand is the thing to check before you buy

This is the single most important detail with second-hand Brocade FC hardware. Many fabric switches ship partially licensed — a 48-port chassis may have only 24 ports enabled, with the rest unlocked by a Port-on-Demand licence. Two physically identical switches can therefore have very different usable capacity.

Licences are tied to the switch's WWN and are not freely transferable between units. We verify and state the enabled port count on our listings rather than quoting the chassis maximum, because the chassis maximum is not what you get.

If you are extending an existing fabric, firmware interoperability also matters — Fabric OS versions must be compatible for switches to join a fabric cleanly. Tell us your current FOS version and we will confirm before shipping.

How do I know how many ports are licensed on a Brocade switch?

Run 'licenseshow' and 'switchshow' on the switch. Port-on-Demand licences enable ports in blocks, so the physical port count is not the usable count. We verify and state enabled ports on our listings rather than quoting chassis capacity.

Are Brocade Port-on-Demand licences transferable?

Generally no. PoD licences are bound to the switch's World Wide Name, so they stay with that specific chassis and cannot be moved to another unit. Buy the port count you need already enabled.

What is Brocade Fabric OS?

Fabric OS, usually shortened to FOS, is the operating system on Brocade Fibre Channel switches. FOS version compatibility matters when joining switches into a fabric — mismatched versions can prevent a switch from merging cleanly, so check your existing fabric's version before adding hardware.

Is Brocade ICX the same as Brocade SAN switches?

No. ICX is the Ethernet campus switching line that came from Foundry Networks and now sits with CommScope/Ruckus. The SAN switches are Fibre Channel storage networking, now under Broadcom. They share a brand name and nothing else architecturally.
