Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between WD Ultrastar and WD Red?

Ultrastar drives are enterprise-grade: 24/7 rated, 2.5M hour MTBF, vibration-tolerant, 5-year warranty, available in SAS. WD Red is NAS-grade: designed for 1-8 bay NAS devices, 1M hour MTBF, SATA only, 3-year warranty. For servers and storage arrays, always choose Ultrastar.

Are WD Ultrastar drives compatible with Dell and HP servers?

Yes. WD Ultrastar drives are standard SAS/SATA enterprise drives compatible with all major server platforms. Many OEM-branded drives in Dell and HP servers are actually WD Ultrastar drives with OEM firmware. We can supply drives with the correct drive caddy for your server model.

How long do WD enterprise drives last?

WD Ultrastar drives carry a 5-year limited warranty and are rated for 2.5 million hours MTBF — the highest in the industry. They are helium-sealed (14TB+) which reduces internal turbulence and wear. In properly cooled data center environments, expect 6-8+ years of reliable operation.
