Ubiquiti Wireless & UniFi Equipment

Point-to-point backhaul, point-to-multipoint radios, antennas and UniFi hardware

About airFiber, airMAX & UniFi

Ubiquiti makes two broad kinds of networking equipment, bought for different jobs. Its outdoor wireless lines (airFiber, airMAX and LTU) build links between buildings and serve wireless ISP subscribers. Its UniFi line covers managed Wi-Fi, switching, gateways and video inside a site.

The lines in this lineup

  • airFiber: point-to-point backhaul radios for links between two sites, in unlicensed bands such as 5 GHz and 24 GHz and in licensed bands
  • airMAX: point-to-point and point-to-multipoint radios such as NanoBeam, NanoStation, PowerBeam and Rocket, with matching dish and sector antennas
  • LTU: Ubiquiti's point-to-multipoint technology, with Rocket base-station radios serving LTU-Pro and LTU-LR client radios
  • UniFi: access points, switches, network video recorders and accessories managed from a UniFi controller or console

Before you order

  • Radios pair within a family. A link needs radios that speak the same protocol at both ends, so check that both belong to the same product family.
  • Frequency and regulation. Check the band against local rules before deploying. In the US, unlicensed operation falls under FCC Part 15, while licensed bands such as 11 GHz need frequency coordination and a licence.
  • Power. Many Ubiquiti radios and older UniFi access points are powered by 24V passive PoE injectors rather than standard 802.3af/at PoE. Check the device's power input before connecting it to a PoE switch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Ubiquiti airFiber and airMAX?

airFiber radios are built for point-to-point backhaul between two sites. airMAX covers both point-to-point and point-to-multipoint links, including the sector and client radios wireless ISPs use to serve subscribers. Radios from the two families do not link to each other.

What is Ubiquiti LTU?

LTU is Ubiquiti's proprietary point-to-multipoint wireless technology. An LTU Rocket base-station radio with a sector antenna serves LTU client radios such as the LTU-Pro and LTU-LR.

Do Ubiquiti radios work with standard PoE switches?

Not always. Many Ubiquiti radios and older UniFi access points use 24V passive PoE and ship with an injector, while newer devices use standard 802.3af/at PoE. Check the power input listed for the device before connecting it to a switch port.

Is UniFi the same as airMAX?

No. UniFi is Ubiquiti's managed line for Wi-Fi, switching, gateways and video inside a site, configured from a UniFi controller or console. airMAX, airFiber and LTU are outdoor wireless lines managed separately.
