About Catalyst 3000 Switches

The 3000-series sits a tier above the 2960: these are Layer 3 switches, used where a wiring closet has to route between VLANs rather than just hand traffic upstream. All three families are end-of-sale, and the installed base is very large — which is why the aftermarket carries them in depth.

The three generations differ more than the numbering suggests

3560 — fixed-configuration Layer 3 access on classic IOS. No stacking on most variants
3650 — IOS-XE, StackWise, integrated wireless-controller capability
3850 — IOS-XE, higher StackWise bandwidth, the usual choice for aggregation

The jump from 3560 to 3650/3850 is a change of operating system, not a spec bump. If you are adding to an existing stack, the generation has to match.

What determines capability

As with any Catalyst, the software image decides the feature set — IP Base and IP Services are meaningfully different, and the image travels with the unit. On the 3650 and 3850, wireless-controller capability also depends on licensing.

These platforms are past end-of-support, so there are no new software releases. That is usually fine for an internal access layer and worth weighing anywhere internet-facing. Send us the model and image you need and we will confirm what the unit is actually running.

What is the difference between Catalyst 3560 and 3850?

Can Catalyst 3650 and 3850 stack together?
