HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Memory Upgrade Guide — DDR4 RDIMM/LRDIMM Compatibility (2026)
Complete HPE-firmware DDR4 memory upgrade list for ProLiant DL380 Gen10 — RDIMM, LRDIMM, NVDIMM, and persistent memory options with population rules, channel-balancing, and refurbished vs new pricing.
HPE DL380 Gen10 Memory: Why Population Rules Matter
The HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 is the workhorse 2U dual-socket server in nearly every Fortune 1000 data center — over 800,000 units in active US deployment as of 2026. Its memory architecture supports up to 3TB of DDR4 across 24 DIMM slots, but population rules are unforgiving: install a non-HPE-firmware DIMM, mix ranks across a channel, or exceed the supported speed table, and the server boots at degraded speed or refuses POST entirely.
This guide is the official memory upgrade reference for IT teams sourcing DDR4 modules for the DL380 Gen10. Every SKU listed has been deployed and validated against HPE iLO5, ROM 3.x, and Smart Update Manager (SUM). Pricing reflects current Pro Disk Network 2026 Q2 inventory.

DL380 Gen10 Memory Architecture
The Gen10 uses Intel Xeon Scalable (1st or 2nd gen) "Skylake-SP" or "Cascade Lake" with 6 memory channels per CPU and 2 DIMMs per channel (2DPC) — total 24 DIMM slots in a dual-CPU configuration.
| Architecture Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| DIMM Slots (2 CPU) | 24 (12 per CPU × 2 CPU) |
| Memory Channels per CPU | 6 |
| DIMMs per Channel | 2 (2DPC) |
| Max Memory | 3TB (24 × 128GB LRDIMM) |
| Min Memory | 16GB (1 × 16GB RDIMM) |
| DDR4 Speeds | 2666 MT/s (1st gen Xeon) / 2933 MT/s (2nd gen Xeon) |
| Memory Modes | Independent / Mirror / Spare / Lockstep |
| Persistent Memory | Intel Optane DC PMM (2nd gen Xeon only) |
Speed downclocks when mixing DIMMs:
- 1DPC at full rated speed
- 2DPC at full rated speed (DL380 Gen10 supports 2DPC at top speed for RDIMMs/LRDIMMs)
- 3 different DIMM ranks across same channel = downclock to slowest

Population Rules — The 6 Mistakes That Brick a DL380 Gen10
- Never mix RDIMM with LRDIMM in the same server. They are physically interchangeable but the server will not POST.
- Never mix DIMM ranks within a channel. A Single Rank DIMM in slot 1 and Dual Rank in slot 2 of the same channel will downclock both to slowest speed (or refuse POST in some BIOS versions).
- Always populate channels symmetrically across CPUs. If CPU0 has 6 DIMMs, CPU1 should have 6 DIMMs of the same SKU.
- Always start with DIMM slot "1" of each channel (white slot, furthest from CPU). Black slots (slot 2) are populated only after all white slots are full.
- Do not mix DDR4 speeds. A 2933 MT/s DIMM mixed with 2666 MT/s will downclock the entire server to 2666.
- Do not exceed 1.5TB per CPU on Cascade Lake without an "M" suffix CPU SKU (e.g., Xeon Gold 6258R-M). Standard Xeon Scalable caps at 1.5TB; "M" variants support 4.5TB; "L" variants support 4.5TB at higher cost.
Recommended Configurations
Mid-Range VMware Cluster Host
384GB total = 12 × 32GB RDIMM (838081-B21) — 6 DIMMs per CPU, fills white slots, 1DPC, full 2666 MT/s, leaves 12 black slots empty for future expansion.
High-Density Hyper-V Cluster
768GB total = 24 × 32GB RDIMM (838081-B21) — 12 DIMMs per CPU, 2DPC, full 2666 MT/s, max DIMM count without going LRDIMM.
vSAN All-Flash Compute-Heavy
1.5TB total = 24 × 64GB RDIMM (838083-B21) or 12 × 128GB LRDIMM (838087-B21) — LRDIMM preferred to leave room for future expansion to 3TB.
SAP HANA / In-Memory DB
3TB DRAM + 6TB Optane = 24 × 128GB LRDIMM (P00926-B21) + 12 × 512GB Optane PMM (P11826-B21) — App Direct mode for SAP HANA persistent memory tier.
Web/App Tier (Cost-Optimized)
192GB total = 12 × 16GB RDIMM (835955-B21) — 6 DIMMs per CPU, 1DPC, full speed, lowest cost per server.
SmartMemory vs Generic — What Changes
HPE "SmartMemory" branded DIMMs (SKU suffix matching the iLO part validation list) include:
- iLO5 predictive failure analysis — DIMMs page-out before failure
- HPE Smart Update Manager (SUM) firmware tracking
- HPE ProSupport / Foundation Care eligibility — required for in-warranty DIMM swap
- Active Health System (AHS) telemetry — DIMM error correlation across the fleet
Generic third-party DDR4 from the same SK Hynix, Samsung, or Micron silicon will boot and operate at full speed but iLO will mark them "Other Vendor" and forfeit predictive failure logging plus ProSupport coverage.
Refurbished vs New Bulk
| Tier | Price vs HPE List | Warranty | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| New SmartMemory (sealed) | -30% to -50% | HPE Foundation Care eligible | Production-critical, in-warranty servers |
| New OEM Bulk (HPE label) | -55% to -70% | 3-year Pro Disk Network warranty | New cluster builds, secondary servers |
| Refurbished SmartMemory | -75% to -85% | 1-year Pro Disk Network warranty | Capacity expansion, lab, dev/test, EOL servers |
For a 24-DIMM 1.5TB upgrade, refurbished SmartMemory typically saves $8,000–$15,000 vs HPE list.

FAQ
Q: Will Crucial / Kingston / Samsung DDR4 work in a DL380 Gen10? A: Yes — DDR4 is a JEDEC standard and DIMMs from any major vendor will boot and operate. iLO5 will mark them "Other Vendor" and you will lose predictive failure logging plus HPE Foundation Care eligibility for the DIMMs themselves. The chassis warranty is unaffected.
Q: Can I mix HPE 2666 MT/s and 2933 MT/s DIMMs in the same server? A: Mechanically yes; the entire memory subsystem will downclock to 2666. Recommended only as a temporary mix during a phased upgrade.
Q: My DL380 Gen10 has 1st-gen Xeon — can I install 2933 MT/s DIMMs? A: Yes — they will boot and run at 2666 MT/s (downclocked to CPU max). When you eventually swap to 2nd-gen Xeon, the same DIMMs will then run at 2933.
Q: Do I need to populate all 6 channels per CPU before adding 2DPC? A: Yes. The "white slot first" rule means populate slot 1 of all 6 channels before adding any DIMMs to slot 2 (black). Asymmetric population (e.g., 7 DIMMs per CPU) forces the platform into "Asymmetric mode" with reduced bandwidth.
Q: Can I run RDIMM in some slots and LRDIMM in others? A: No. RDIMM and LRDIMM are mutually exclusive across the entire chassis (both CPUs, all 24 slots).
Q: What is HPE SmartMemory vs HPE Standard Memory? A: SmartMemory is HPE-binned DDR4 with iLO-aware SPD that enables predictive failure logging, ProSupport coverage, and SUM firmware tracking. Standard Memory is generic JEDEC-compliant DDR4 — boots fine, lacks iLO integration. Pro Disk Network sells both clearly labeled.
Q: Is refurbished server memory reliable? A: Yes when sourced and tested correctly. Pro Disk Network DIMMs go through: (1) full DRAM bit-error sweep on a HPE-pattern memory tester, (2) 24-hour burn-in at 70°C, (3) SPD verification + re-flash to current HPE firmware, (4) iLO compatibility test on a reference DL380. We back every refurbished DIMM with a 1-year warranty.
