Port Options and PoE
The 9200 series offers straightforward 1GbE access ports in 24 and 48-port configurations with optional PoE+ (30W per port). This is enough for standard office deployments: VoIP phones, laptops, access points, and security cameras.
The 9300 opens up significantly more options:
- C9300-24T-E - 24 fixed 1GbE ports, no PoE. Best for server closets or trunk connections.
- C9300-48P-A - 48 ports with PoE+ (30W per port, 740W budget). Standard access layer choice.
- C9300-48U-A - 48 ports with UPOE (60W per port). Required for Cisco 802.11ax access points, thin clients, and high-power IoT devices.
- C9300-24UX-A - 24 multigigabit ports (100M/1G/2.5G/5G/10G) with UPOE+. The go-to for Wi-Fi 6E AP deployments where APs need more than 1Gbps backhaul.
If you are deploying Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 access points, you need the 9300 with multigigabit ports. The 9200's fixed 1GbE ports cannot deliver the backhaul bandwidth that modern APs demand.
Stacking: The Operational Differentiator
Both switches support stacking, but the difference is significant:
Catalyst 9200 StackWise-160 operates at 160 Gbps aggregate bandwidth across up to 8 switches. This is adequate for a small branch office stack of 2-4 switches where inter-switch traffic is modest.
Catalyst 9300 StackWise-480 triples the bandwidth to 480 Gbps across up to 8 switches. In a wiring closet with 6-8 switches and hundreds of PoE devices, the additional stacking bandwidth prevents bottlenecks during peak traffic.
The stacking cables are not interchangeable between the 9200 and 9300 series. Plan accordingly if you are mixing models in the same building (which Cisco does not recommend for stacking but is common for separate roles).
DNA Licensing: The Hidden Cost
Every Catalyst 9000 switch requires a Cisco DNA license. There are three tiers:
- DNA Essentials - Basic automation, monitoring, and Plug-and-Play. Included as a subscription (3, 5, or 7 year terms).

Pair with a Catalyst 9300 at the distribution layer only if you need 10G uplinks to a firewall or core router.
Mid-market (5-30 switches, 200-2,000 users): Use the 9300 as your primary access switch in headquarters and high-density buildings. Deploy the 9200 in branch offices and low-density floors. This hybrid approach balances performance where it matters with cost savings where it does not.
Enterprise (30+ switches, 2,000+ users): The 9300 should be your standard access switch, with 9400 modular chassis at distribution and core. SD-Access deployments require 9300 or higher as fabric edge nodes. The 9200 can serve as an extended node in SD-Access topologies but cannot function as a fabric edge.
