Server Mezzanine Cards — Blade & Modular I/O

Mezzanine I/O adapters for Dell PowerEdge blades and HP BladeSystem c-Class

About Mezzanine Cards

A mezzanine card adds network, Fibre Channel, or InfiniBand I/O to a blade or modular server without a standard PCIe slot. Blades are too thin for upright add-in cards, so the mezzanine card seats flat on a dedicated fabric connector and links to the chassis interconnect bays. We stock mezzanine adapters for Dell PowerEdge M-series blades and HP BladeSystem c-Class.

Mezzanine cards are fabric- and slot-specific. Blade chassis map each mezzanine slot (Fabric A/B/C on HP c-Class, Fabric 1/2/3 on Dell M1000e) to a matching interconnect module — an Ethernet mezzanine must pair with an Ethernet switch/pass-through in the same fabric, a Fibre Channel mezzanine with an FC module, and so on. Order the card that matches both your blade generation and the fabric you are populating.

Common Mezzanine Fitments

  • HP BladeSystem c-Class (BL460c, BL465c, BL685c) — FlexFabric, 1GbE/10GbE Ethernet, InfiniBand, and FC mezzanine cards
  • Dell PowerEdge M-series (M600, M610, M620, M630, M640) — Ethernet, CNA, and FC mezzanine adapters for the M1000e chassis
  • Smart Array / RAID mezzanine controllers — storage controller mezzanine boards for blade drive bays

Not sure which fabric slot you need? Send us your blade model and chassis and we will match the correct mezzanine card and fabric.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a server mezzanine card?

A mezzanine card is an I/O adapter (Ethernet, Fibre Channel, CNA, or InfiniBand) designed for blade and modular servers. Instead of using a full-height PCIe slot, it mounts flat on a dedicated mezzanine connector and routes through the chassis to interconnect modules. This lets a thin blade add network and storage connectivity that would not physically fit as a standard add-in card.

Are Dell and HP mezzanine cards interchangeable?

No. Mezzanine cards are proprietary to the chassis architecture. Dell PowerEdge M-series (M1000e) and HP BladeSystem c-Class use different mezzanine connectors, fabric mapping, and firmware. A card must match the blade model, generation, and the specific fabric slot you are installing into. Always confirm the blade model before ordering.

How do fabric slots and interconnect modules relate?

Blade chassis pair each mezzanine fabric with an interconnect bay. An Ethernet mezzanine in Fabric B must have a compatible Ethernet switch or pass-through module installed in the corresponding Fabric B interconnect bays; a Fibre Channel mezzanine needs an FC module. If the fabric types do not match, the card will not link. Plan the mezzanine and the interconnect module together.
