M4300 — stackable Layer 3

A fully managed Layer 3 stackable line with 1G and 10G models and PoE+ variants. It is used as campus aggregation and as a core switch in small and mid-size networks, and it is popular in AV and broadcast because of its non-blocking architecture and multicast handling.

M4250 — built for AV over IP

The M4250 is Netgear's AV line, and its distinguishing feature is software rather than silicon: it ships with pre-built profiles for Dante, NDI, Q-SYS and similar AV-over-IP protocols. Those profiles configure the IGMP snooping, querier, VLAN and QoS settings that AV traffic needs — settings that are easy to get subtly wrong by hand and that produce intermittent, hard-to-diagnose faults when you do.

Why AV deployments care about multicast

AV-over-IP is multicast-heavy. Without correct IGMP snooping and a querier on the segment, multicast floods every port and the network falls over under load. That is the specific problem these switches are configured to avoid — and the reason a generic managed switch often disappoints in an AV rack.
