HP 9000 PA-RISC & Integrity Itanium CPUs: Part Number Guide
How to order HP 9000 PA-RISC and HP Integrity Itanium processors by host system and part number: rp3440, C8000, rp2400, N4000, T600, D250/D280, rx3600, rx6600, rx4640 and the Itanium 9000 and 9100 series.
TL;DR
Order HP 9000 (PA-RISC) and HP Integrity (Itanium) processors by host system first and part number second. The same processor family appears with different clock speeds, cache figures and host names, so you can't order on the family name alone.
- Read three things before ordering: the full model string of the server or workstation, the part number on the module or board you are replacing, and the clock, cache and bus figures on its label.
- Order PA-RISC parts by part number, not generation. OpenPA dates the PA-8000 (used in the D280 and T600) to 1996, and the PA-8800 (rp3440, C8000) to 2004 on the Itanium processor bus.
- For the Itanium 9000 and 9100 series, the processor number identifies the chip. The 9015, 9040 and 9050 are Intel's 9000 series; the 9140M and 9150N are the 9100 series. Match the number, clock, cache and front-side bus (FSB) to what is already installed.
- Complete systems (the rp3440-4 base system, an rx1600 server and a console bundle) have their own section and are not mixed into the processor tables.
Before you order: what to read off the machine
The model string. HP sold several of these servers under two names. OpenPA's A-Class reference shows that the A400 was also sold as the rp2400 (and rp2430) and the A500 as the rp2450 (and rp2470), with a suffix such as -44, -5X, -6X or -7X marking the processor fitted. Write down the whole string, not just "rp2400".
The number on the part. Some listings below carry short numbers ending in a letter (AB665A, AD391A). Others carry dash numbers (A7138-69002, AB463-60113). Search every number printed on the label, not just the first one you see. For how HP's option and spare numbers differ on later ProLiant parts, see our HP part numbers guide.
Clock, cache and bus. If the label shows clock, cache and bus figures, note them. They are the quickest way to catch a mismatch before anything ships.
Why a cache figure alone will not identify a PA-RISC CPU
"1.5MB" appears on PA-8500, PA-8700 and PA-8800 listings. Listings quote different cache measures, and each chip splits its cache differently. From OpenPA's processor pages:
| Processor | Released | Clock (OpenPA) | Cache (OpenPA) |
|---|---|---|---|
| PA-8000 (PCX-U) | 1996 | up to 180 MHz | up to 1 MB instruction + 1 MB data, off-chip |
| PA-8500 | 1998 | up to 440 MHz | 0.5 MB instruction + 1 MB data, on-chip |
| PA-8700 | 2001 | up to 750 MHz; 875 MHz as PA-8750+ | 0.75 MB instruction + 1.5 MB data, on-chip |
| PA-8800 (dual-core) | 2004 | up to 1 GHz | 0.75 MB instruction + 0.75 MB data per core, plus 32 MB off-chip L2 shared |
A PA-8700's data cache is 1.5 MB and its total on-chip cache is 2.25 MB, and both figures appear on PA-8700 listings. A PA-8500's on-chip cache also totals 1.5 MB. Always read the cache figure together with the family name and clock.
The bus differs too. OpenPA describes the PA-8800 as using the Itanium processor bus (128-bit, 200 MHz). It shows the D250 and D280 on HP's Runway CPU/memory bus, with GSC+ for system I/O, on the U2 and UTurn chipsets respectively. Because the buses differ, order older and newer PA-RISC parts strictly by part number.
PA-RISC processors by host system
HP 9000 rp3440
According to OpenPA, the rp3440 arrived in 2004 as a 2U rack server on the HP zx1 chipset. It takes one or two processors: the dual-core PA-8800 at 900 MHz-1.0 GHz with 32 MB off-chip L2, or the PA-8900 at 900 MHz-1.1 GHz with 64 MB L2. OpenPA lists its sibling, the rp3410, with an 800 MHz dual-core PA-8800.
| Part number | What the catalogue name says |
|---|---|
| A7138-69002 | HP 800MHz FSB 1.5MB Cache PA800 Dual Core Processor for RP3440 |
The name says "800MHz FSB" and "PA800". Before you order, compare that wording with the clock and part number printed on the module already in your rp3440. If they differ, send us your module number.
HP 9000 C8000 workstation
OpenPA describes the C8000 as the last PA-RISC workstation, produced from 2004 on the same zx1 chipset. It takes one or two dual-core PA-8800 processors at 900 MHz-1.0 GHz, or PA-8900 processors at 900 MHz-1.1 GHz.
| Part number | What the catalogue name says |
|---|---|
| AB665A | HP 900MHz 1.5MB L1 Cache PA8800 Dual Core Processor for C8000 |
OpenPA gives the PA-8800's on-chip cache as 0.75 MB instruction plus 0.75 MB data per core.
HP 9000 rp2400 and rp2450 (A-Class)
OpenPA's A-Class table shows that the processor changes even within one model family:
| Model | Processor (OpenPA) | Clock |
|---|---|---|
| A400 / rp2400 | PA-8500 or PA-8600, single | 440 / 550 MHz |
| A400 / rp2430 | PA-8700, single | 650 MHz |
| A500 / rp2450 | 1-2 PA-8500 or PA-8600 | 440 / 550 MHz |
| A500-6X | 1-2 PA-8700 | 650 MHz |

| A3262-60056 | HP Dual 180MHz CPU Board for 9000/D280 |
Both boards share the A3262 prefix, but OpenPA shows the two servers running different processors and chipsets. A shared prefix does not mean the boards swap. Order by the full number.
PA-RISC listings with no host in the name
| Part number | What the catalogue name says |
|---|---|
| A6435-69001 | HP Pa-risc 8700 875MHz Processor with 2.25MB Cache |

| A5500-04004 | HP 440MHz 1.5MB Cache PA-RISC Processor |
OpenPA calls the 875 MHz PA-8700 the PA-8750+. None of these three catalogue names states a host system, and A5500-04004 does not say which PA-RISC processor it is. Match them by the number on the part you are replacing.
Boards and risers with little in the name
| Part number | What the catalogue name says |
|---|---|
| A6913-60002 | HP Processor Cell Board Riser for 8420/7420 |

FAQ
Will the C8000 module (AB665A) work in an rp3440, or the other way round? OpenPA shows both machines on HP's zx1 chipset with dual-core PA-8800 processors. However, each catalogue name gives a single host: AB665A names the C8000 and A7138-69002 names the RP3440. We describe a part only against the host its name gives. Order the part number printed on the module you are replacing.
What does "PCX-U" mean on the T600 CPU? OpenPA gives PCX-U (code name Jade) as the PA-8000, released in 1996 at up to 180 MHz. OpenPA lists the T600 and the D270, D280, D370 and D380 among the systems that used it.
Is an "Itanium 2 9140M" the same processor as an "Itanium 9140M"? Our listings use both forms. Intel's ARK names it the Intel Itanium Processor 9140M, and the processor number is what identifies it. Also check the clock and FSB, as described above.
Are these processors end of life? Intel's ARK marks the 9015, 9040, 9050, 9140M and 9150N as Discontinued. Our Cisco and HPE EOL/EOSL guide explains how the end-of-life and end-of-service-life stages affect support planning.
What are the return, warranty and shipping terms? Returns are accepted within 30 days with an RMA. Refurbished parts carry a 90-day advance-replacement warranty. In-stock items ordered before 3pm ET ship the same day.
