How to Add Memory to a Dell PowerEdge Server: Step-by-Step RAM Upgrade Guide
Step-by-step guide to adding or upgrading RAM in Dell PowerEdge R640, R740, R740xd, R940, and T640 servers. Covers memory population rules, DIMM placement, and compatible part numbers.
Before You Buy: Know Your Server Generation
Dell PowerEdge servers follow a generational numbering system. The generation determines which memory type, speed, and maximum capacity your server supports:
- 13th Gen (R630, R730, R730xd): DDR4-2133/2400, max 24 DIMMs per CPU, max 1.5TB per socket
- 14th Gen (R640, R740, R740xd, R940): DDR4-2666, max 12 DIMMs per CPU, max 3TB per server (dual-socket)
- 15th Gen (R650, R750, R750xs): DDR4-3200, max 16 DIMMs per CPU
- 16th Gen (R660, R760): DDR5-4800, max 16 DIMMs per CPU
You cannot mix generations. DDR4 will not physically fit in a DDR5 slot and vice versa.
Step 1: Check Current Memory Configuration
Before ordering new DIMMs, check what you already have installed:
From iDRAC (remote): Log into your iDRAC web interface, go to System > Memory, and you will see every DIMM slot with its current population, speed, and size.
From the OS: On Linux: sudo dmidecode -t memory | grep -E "Size|Speed|Manufacturer|Part" On Windows: Open Task Manager > Performance > Memory, or use CPU-Z.
From the physical server: Power off, open the top cover, and read the labels on installed DIMMs. Note the DIMM layout diagram printed on the inside of the cover.
Step 2: Understand Population Rules
Dell has strict memory population rules. Violating them causes the server to boot with reduced performance or not boot at all.
Golden rules for 14th Gen (R640/R740):
- Always populate DIMMs starting from the slot farthest from the CPU (A1 first, then A2, then A3, etc.)
- All DIMMs in a channel must be the same size and type
- Populate channels evenly across all memory channels (balanced configuration)
- White slots fill before black slots
- For dual-rank DIMMs, do not exceed 2 DIMMs per channel at 2666 MT/s
Simplified: If you have a dual-socket R740 and want to install 8x 32GB DIMMs, put 4 DIMMs per CPU, one in each of the first 4 channels (slots A1, A2, A3, A4). This gives you 256GB total with full bandwidth.
Step 3: Choose the Right DIMM Type
RDIMM (Registered DIMM): Standard choice for most servers. Available in 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB per module. Uses a register chip to buffer signals, allowing higher capacity per channel.
LRDIMM (Load-Reduced DIMM): For maximum capacity. Available in 64GB and 128GB per module. Uses a data buffer chip to reduce electrical load, allowing 3 DIMMs per channel at full speed. More expensive than RDIMM.
UDIMM (Unbuffered DIMM): Only for entry-level single-socket servers (T340, R240). Cheaper but limited to 2 DIMMs per channel and lower total capacity.
Do not mix RDIMM and LRDIMM in the same server. They are electrically incompatible.
Step 4: Physical Installation
- Power off the server and disconnect power cables
- Open the top cover (slide release latch)
- Locate the DIMM slots (arranged in rows near each CPU)
- Open the retention clips on both sides of the target slot
- Align the DIMM notch with the slot key
- Press firmly until both clips snap into place
- Close the cover, reconnect power, and boot
The server will automatically detect new memory during POST. Check iDRAC or the BIOS to verify all DIMMs are recognized at the correct speed.
